ChristianaCare and the Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute have made the difficult decision to cancel the 5th Annual Friends 5K Run/Walk, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, due to forecasted weather conditions and concerns for the safety of participants, volunteers and event staff.
The decision was made after careful review of evolving weather forecasts and potential impacts on the event, with the safety of participants, volunteers, caregivers and community members as the foremost consideration.
The annual Friends 5K Run/Walk brings together cancer survivors, patients, families, caregivers and community members in support of the mission of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. Organizers extend their sincere thanks to everyone who registered, volunteered and sponsored this year's event.
"While we are deeply disappointed that we will not be able to gather as planned, we are incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm, generosity and support shown by everyone who helped bring this event together," said Thomas Schwaab., M.D., Ph.D., Bank of America Endowed Medical Director of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.
"Thank you to our volunteers, participants, sponsors, facilities and public safety teams, Friends committee members and ChristianaCare caregivers whose time, energy and dedication made this event possible."
Arrangements are being made for participants to pick up their commemorative T-shirts next week. Additional details will be shared directly with registered participants.
"We know many people were looking forward to this event, from longtime supporters and volunteers to patients, survivors and families who planned to participate," said Dennis Voorheis, chair of the Friends of Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.
"While this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, we are incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support from our community. The compassion and generosity behind this event mean so much to the patients and families we serve every day."
