Critical Care in the Air: Launching the First Emergency Aircraft of Its Kind in the Northeast

ChristianaCare and Air Methods unveiled ChristianaCare LifeNet’s new Airbus H145 D3 helicopter during a ceremony on Dec. 17 at New Castle Airport, marking a significant advancement in emergency air medical care for Delaware and the surrounding region. The H145 D3 joins ChristianaCare’s LifeNet air medical program, operated in partnership with Air Methods, which serves Delaware and portions of Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

“At ChristianaCare, our mission is to serve our neighbors,” said Ric Cuming, Ed.D., MSN, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, chief operating officer at ChristianaCare. “This Airbus H145 D3 is not just a new mode of transport but an innovative leap forward in how we deliver critical medical services during those urgent moments when every second truly matters. “Every flight reflects our commitment to compassionate, expert care and our belief that technology’s greatest value is enabling caregivers to focus fully on their patients. The addition of this helicopter strengthens our commitment to making high-quality care accessible to the communities we serve.”

This next generation helicopter, the first of its kind in the Northeast region, will improve emergency medical response, enabling clinicians to provide exceptional critical care in the air, enhancing the program’s 24/7 emergency air transport capabilities for critically ill and injured patients throughout Delaware and the surrounding region. “The introduction of this new helicopter marks a significant advancement for our community, paving the way for an improved chapter in patient care and medical services,” said Christopher Rogan, M.D., vice chair of Prehospital Services and medical director of LifeNet/CareNet at ChristianaCare. “The innovative technology built into this aircraft ensures that medical care is never compromised, regardless of where our patients are located. Our goal is to create a safe haven for our patients from the moment our care team arrives.”

More than 50 health care leaders, first responders, and industry partners attended the event, which included remarks from ChristianaCare, Air Methods, and Airbus leadership, along with tours of the state-of-the-art aircraft. “This aircraft is a powerful symbol of what strong partnerships can achieve,” said Steve Konold, regional vice president at Air Methods. “Together with ChristianaCare and Airbus, we are raising the bar for air medical transport — enhancing safety, expanding capabilities, and ensuring patients across this region receive the highest level of care when they need it most.”

The Airbus H145 D3 features a five-bladed main rotor system, enhanced engines, and Helionix® avionics, delivering increased payload capacity, improved performance, reduced vibration, and a quieter cabin. These advancements translate to greater reliability, improved patient comfort, and increased operational efficiency. “ChristianaCare’s new H145 D3 represents a significant advancement in how we care for our patients and protect our crews,” said John Roussis, program director at ChristianaCare. “The enhanced safety features, increased power and advanced technology built into this aircraft allow our teams to operate with greater confidence in challenging conditions, ensuring we can respond quickly and safely.
